Idea; Your own radio station

So, the FM transmitter I ordered off of Amazon should be arriving tomorrow. Even with the low-power setting, I'm more than set for transmitting around the house. I figure, instead of piping music to just 1 stereo (from an iPod or a tablet), why not have just 1 device do the whole house? With all my appliances, quite a few still tune in FM radio, many of which I haven't used in years. There's 3 surround sound systems I have, my radio alarm clock, and my little CD player in the garage.

I plug in an iPod, tablet, Linux system, or anything that's going to play my MP3 library, and I'm good to go. Just set it on loop play, and I'll have my music everywhere. No need to bring my iPod or cell phone around when I'm doing chores(unless it's podcasts).

When I have guests over( a little party), I can just turn on several radios, and I have background music of my choice, and all of it would be synced.

First, I will need to find the optimal open range of frequencies in the FM spectrum to broadcast on. Second, I might need to do some antenna hook-ups on the surround-sound systems, as they haven't been used in years.

Taking it Further

What if I could take it further, perhaps dipping into home automation?  If a doorbell rings, have it interrupt the music to say someone's at the door. If I get a new email, have it play some notification. Google Home or Alexa integration could open up some possibilities.

Idea: Smart Doorbell

Why not bring the doorbell into the modern age? Hook up the doorbell to a Raspberry Pi, etc to add functionality to just 1 button.

Ideas:

1. Quiet Hours - Have the doorbell not work during certain hours. This will prevent annoyances while sleeping.

2. Recording doorbell button presses - Mark the time & date when the doorbell was hit.A simple log entry. To go into detail, mark the log when the state of the switch goes closed & then back open.

3. Maximum window of doorbell time: To deter people hitting the doorbell for a long period of time, have the doorbell stop working  after a certain time period. Functionality will be restored after a "rest" period.

4. Quiet Hour override - If the user holds down the button for a specified period of time, the bell will activate during quiet hours.

Idea: RPI in a keyboard

I have a Raspberry Pi zero, still sitting in the drawyer. My idea would be to put it into an old keyboard, drill some holes for various connections out(HDMI, etc), and install RetroPie on it.

With RetroPie installed, I could use all the retro-computers featured(Apple //, TI-99/4A etc) all in one convenient package.

I just need to find some time to do it, and a way to directly wire in the keyboard. Shouldn't be too hard.
